NEA Planning Part 1 - Audience profile

In this post, i will be looking into my audience using demographic marketing. I will be able to see the most common age within my responses and could use this to my advantage. I am only going to focus on my target audience (16-25 year old's) this will restrict any data that will not be beneficial . In my survey, i want to create questions that benefit my product as much as possible. in which case, though i will be highly focused on demographic, i will be more focused on what they want within my product.

Here i have a survey of age, this is so i get a rough idea of the ages that have been involved within my market research. Making sure, i have successfully only collected data from my target audience, this is so the results do not benefit an age range that is not within my target, and take away the focus of benefiting my audience.

Through the products i have studied i found 3 main topic areas that were found to be successful with amusing the audience. i then gave my market audience the option to vote on what they would most like to hear. The majority of the votes went to celebrity so i need to now consider the way i am going to incorporate celebrity into my product.

A large number of votes went to both non account holders and subscription holders,  this was expected as many products, and those i have studied in particular have this similar access to their content.

I then gave the option for them to decide whether or not subscription should be free or have a cost. Many of the audience picked free witch is understandable as they would be the users of this site and would, in many cases, prefer not to pay for the targeted content available in the subscription.

I understand that my brief provides broadcasts times of 11-11:30pm weekdays, however, they did not say in particular what day of the week it should be. So with the idea that i am creating one broadcast, i would like to schedule it to my audience preferred day of the week. Not only benefiting my viewer performance but also befitting the audience to a time where they can listen. In my research, the audience picked Friday as the most appropriate day, which i will allow me to easily choose which day in particular i would want to broadcast my product.

This question is very significant to the outcome of my product and the number of hosts within my broadcast could change the whole atmosphere of the show. One host was the least picked, though there will be special guests included within the broadcasts, having one host is risky. If the some of the audience is not to keen with the host it may deter them from continuing to listen to my broadcasts. However if there are 3 or more the audience may feel like it is to crowded, also the hosts may not be able to fit in what they want to say ruining my broadcast potential. I think 2 is the perfect fit for my show and allows the chance for the audience to bond with both hosts with the ability to bring in a celebrity and the broadcast not feel staged as they can talk when they feel like it.

This question is a very important question, it will decide the colour scheme for the whole of my website. As evident, both red while and black, blue white and black had equal results. So i repeated this question and the results that had returned was 7 for the blue and remained 5 for the red. This fits well as the colour scheme for BBC Radio 4 is also blue, white and black and as i am broadcasting for BBC Radio 4 it will fit in well with the radio segment of BBC.

Here i gave the audience the chance to say their favourite celebrity, i did this not because i am able to bring the celebrity into my broad cast, but to look at their character and why my audience may like them, which i can then encourage my hosts to behave like them or invite guests with similar traits. I noticed that 6 out of 10 valid responses were male and these results were picked with an average of 8 girls over boys. This means that both girls and boys

This question was related to the website, asking whether the audience would enjoy a preview of upcoming broadcasts displayed on the website. The answer is evidently clear which allows to display upcoming broadcasts on my website, knowing it will be beneficial to my audience.

Completing this market research has allowed me to firstly understand my audience and want to see within my product. The results will allow me to structure my website and how it operates with the audiences wants in mind. Not only that, but it will shape how my broadcast turns out in terms of hosts, guests and topics. This piece of market research is highly beneficial to the out come of my products and producing a positive outcome from the audience.

NEA Research Part 7 - Producers/Directors Research

I will be researching a range of media practitioners, their use of conventions within their products and also conventions within similar products that they produce. I will use this research to manipulate their conventions into my broadcast as well as my website. in order to reflect their style into my product successfully.

NEA Research Part 6 - Institutional Research

In this post i will be researching into my media institution. I will look into the media they produce as well as if they provide any other products or services. I will look into the structure of the institution and into other information such as funding, ownership and targets. Having a better idea of the institution i am studying will allow me to understand their media aims and objectives, to then use them in my own product. I will look into my institutions audience, structure, ownership and funding. Doing this will allow me to understand the functions of my institution as well as there aims, values and objectives, which i can then incorporate into my own product.

The benefits of looking into the institution i will be creating and distributing a product for, will be the ability to use their values and description of media and conform it into my own product. Researching into this creates a direction for my product.

NEA Research Part 5 - Media Theory research

In this blog i am going to look into the media theories. i am going to understand how and why they were used within my products and what effect they have on the audience. I could look into the theories that could be analysed through my product, and make sure they have the impact on the audience that i want it to have.

2:40 a statement is made "that he values antiques like a girl". This was used as an insult, evident by the tone in the hosts voice, supporting bell hooks Feminist Theory. Firstly, the statement is suggesting that being labeled as a girl should be taken as an insult as it is considered that the qualities and abilities of women has much less capability then men. Not only that but the the idea that women deeply value antiques suggest women are extremely materialistic, this could be an idea of oppression as they could be referring to the past where women valued objects and class.

Within this programme, a range of comedy conventions are used, this could be related to Neale's genre theory. The use of sound effects within my products of an audience laughing, is a great physiological effect to make the audience believe what the programme is successfully funny as a whole. Being humorous is a very important convention within comedy, if the product is not successful it will suffer being labeled as a comedy. Further more, the use of narratives has also been used as a convention, the narrators use of voice changing, to imitate and mock individuals, is imputed to help the audience understand the segment more. Allowing the audience to understand the storyline easier allows them to understand and react to to the comedy more. making it a successful convention for comedy.

Within the programme a comment was made from the male host, suggesting if he did something bad his wife will put him in the dog house and leave him without dinner for a week. This statement relates to Hall's theories of representation, the stereotype that women are household bound and are the source of cleaning and particular for this case, cooking. Though it was not articulated in an purposely insulting manor, the idea that the host is still confining his wife to this particular role as well as the use of negativity is very much oppressing and stereotypical.

Expanding this idea of negativity,This quote by the host could also be considered part of Tradov's narratology theory. Where we have a clear villain within this story line. However, we could suggest that they have purposely, made the woman the villain within this story line, ignoring the cause of her actions, though the host is suggesting he did something not in her favour to cause this, the negative action is focused more on what his wife did then what he did himself. Though they could both be considered a villain,it is evident that the wife has been awarded with that role within this segment, appointing it to Tradov's narratology theory.
